Thirst

“but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14 (NIV)

People get thirsty. It is an inevitability that cannot be escaped. Avoiding it causes death. Take care of it and it will return. Thirst reveals the need to be continually refreshed, renewed, and energized. It can serve as a reminder of the need for something external to sustain the internal.

Spiritually the thirst for purpose, meaning, and significance works the same way. There must be an external influence to care for the internal need. God’s son, Jesus, is the only external influence that can quench thirst. Allow Jesus to be the refreshment, renewal, and energy that life demands. Here is a poem that echoes this truth.

I thirst to be more thirsty.
I cry out to lose myself.
I need to be more needy.
I want to be Yours.

I hunger to be more hungry.
I sing out to shout God’s praise.
I need to be more needy.
I know that I am Yours.

Made new by your Words
His strong, tender way.
Longing for more
I trust what You say.

“You’ll never thirst again.
You’ll find yourself you’ll see.
The more you, need the more I fill.
Your need is met through Me.”

Questions:
What thirsts do you have that are not quenched through Jesus?

How can you begin to allow Jesus to quench every thirst?

Prayer:
Father, thank you for sending Jesus. Without Jesus my thirsts would kill me. Help me to deepen my trust and willingness to allow Jesus to care for my every need. I want to serve you with everything I am.
