Is Jesus Enough?

Mark‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

At the end of Mark chapter 4, we find the disciples asking, “Who is this man that even the winds obey him?” It’s a question of authority, power, and identity. And that question lingers as we transition into Mark 5, where we witness a dramatic encounter in — a man possessed by a legion of demons set free.

Today, we will explore four players of in this story:

  • Jesus – the Son of the Most High God
  • The demon-possessed man who was freed.
  • The herdsmen and the people from the city who were afraid and rejected Jesus.
  • Those in the Decapolis who marveled at what Jesus had done.

We begin with the same question that the disciples asked: Who is Jesus, and is He enough for you?

Who is Jesus?

When Jesus steps out of the boat and onto the shore, the possessed man runs to Him, not away from Him. The demons cry out, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?”

Jesus speaks, and the demons have no choice but to obey. With just a word, He releases this man from years of torment, sending the pigs into the very waters he calmed the day before. The authority of Jesus over the supernatural is undeniable. This is the same Jesus who calmed the storm in chapter 4, now calms the storm in this man’s soul.

  • Jesus’ authority is not limited by circumstances or forces beyond our control.
  • His power is enough to free us from whatever chains hold us.

The Demon-Possessed Man was Freed

Imagine the state of this man before Jesus healed him—bound by chains, ostracized by society, tormented day and night. No one could help him, and no one even tried anymore. Then Jesus arrived.

With a single command, the man’s entire life was changed. He went from being out of his mind, self-destructive, and isolated to sitting clothed and in his right mind at the feet of Jesus. The healing power of Jesus brought this man back to life—he was restored, not just physically, but spiritually and mentally.

  • What chains are binding you today?
  • What areas of your life do you feel are beyond hope?

Just like the demon-possessed man, Jesus is enough to heal you from your darkest pains, your worst mistakes, and the struggles you think will never end.

The Herdsmen and the People Were Afraid and Sent Jesus Away

Instead of celebrating this miraculous healing, the people of the city reacted with fear. Why? Because they valued their possessions—the herd of pigs that drowned—more than the freedom Jesus had given to this man. They were more concerned about their economic loss than the transformation of a human life.

Not only that, they had contained the problem. They put the chains on him, they isolated him, they marginalized him. They had control of the problem and Jesus messed up their plans.

How often do we respond to Jesus the same way? Sometimes we value our comfort, our finances, or our routines more than the transformative power of Christ. We fear the changes Jesus might bring into our lives because it might cost us something.

  • What are you holding onto that might keep Jesus at a distance?
  • Is fear or selfish desire stopping you from letting Jesus do His healing work in your life?

Those in the Decapolis Marveled

After the man was healed, Jesus sent him on a mission: “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.” Jesus didn’t just set him free to live in peace—He gave him a purpose. This once tortured man became a messenger of hope.

He went to the Decapolis, a region of ten cities, and shared the story of what Jesus had done. And the people marveled. His testimony became a powerful witness to the authority and mercy of Jesus.

  • How is Jesus calling you to share your story of His grace?
  • Do others marvel at the work Jesus has done in your life?

Is Jesus Enough?

As we reflect on this story, I challenge you to ask yourself: Is Jesus Enough?

  • In your own personal life—Is Jesus Enough?
  • In your community, your workplace, or your circle of friends—Is Jesus Enough?
  • In your family, even in the face of conflict and struggle—Is Jesus Enough?
  • In your relationships with your neighbors—Is Jesus Enough?

Let this question guide your thoughts and actions in the days to come. Whatever chains are holding you, Jesus is enough to break them. Whatever fear or selfish desires are stopping you, Jesus is enough to overcome them. And whatever darkness you’re facing, Jesus is enough to bring healing and freedom.
