Communion: The Lord’s Supper

Communion

Jesus’s Last Meal (Luke 22:7-20)

What do we learn about God?
What do we learn about man?
Is there an example to follow?
Is there a command to obey?

What is the Lord’s Supper? (1 Corinthians 11:26)
The Lord’s Supper is a timeless expression of Jesus’ love. It helps connect us to Jesus. Every significant relationship we have is built on shared experiences. Think about the places your mind goes when you think about your loved ones. You think about heart warming, funny, and many other life impacting experiences. When you think about Jesus these same feelings apply. Each time we participate in the Lord’s Supper we can connect to the love that Jesus demonstrated. There is nothing more life transforming than shared experiences with Jesus.

Why do we eat the Lord’s Supper? (1 Corinthians 11:26)
The Lord’s Supper serves as a spiritual reminder. Reminders are so important. I have reminders on my phone, on sticky notes, on my calendar, and I occasionally get verbal reminders from my family. The purpose of reminders is to keep us aware of important things. They help us to stay focused as we move forward. Without reminders we would aimlessly travel through our days. The Lord’s Supper is a constant reminder that Jesus died to give us forgiveness. Participating in the Lord’s Supper will remind us to view the world through the filter of Jesus.

How do we receive the Lord’s Supper? (1 Corinthians 11: 27-29)
We receive the Lord’s Supper when we have taken the time to be reflective. Reflect on an event in your life that impacted the way you think, feel, or act. That event helped you learn from your mistakes, celebrate your victories, and/or trust in tried and true experiences. Reflection can be a powerful motivator. Scripture commands that we be reflective. It says we should examine ourselves, confess our sins to God, and remember Jesus died to give us forgiveness. These simple commands sum up why Jesus asked us to receive the Lord’s Supper. He knew we needed to reflect to stay focused.

Who should receive the Lord’s Supper? (Acts 2:42) (1 Corinthians 11: 27-29)
Any follower of Christ can receive the Lord’s Supper. I wear hats, shirts, and occasional face paint that support my favorite sports teams. I am a follower of that team. I want everyone to know where my allegiance lies. The Lord’s Supper serves as an outward expression to the world that you are a follower of Christ and your allegiance is with Christ. The more we outwardly express Jesus the more we will align with Him.

In summary, the Lord’s Supper is a timeless expression of Jesus love that serves as a spiritual reminder. We are commanded to reflect upon what Jesus did and participate in the Lord’s Supper. This command encourages us to deepen our relationship with Christ, which solidifies our allegiance to Him.
